It pisses me off that if you are a girl with a moderately pretty face you are supposed to sound a certain way. They try to flatter you and say you have the potential to be this massive star, but that’s not what it’s all about. It is offensive when people try to take away your artistic integrity, but you gotta fight for it.

People are like, ‘Oh, if I don’t turn off a light, it’s not going to make a difference, it’s only one person.’ It’s like how they feel when they download a record: ‘It doesn’t really matter if just one person does it,’ but it’s single-handedly ruining the music industry. You have to look at the bigger picture.

I never really had a place in high school. I just made some friends here and there, but focused on what I loved to do and tried not to let everything that was around get me down.

I mean… if I’m wearing a flowery dress I’m going to feel less like I can kick somebody’s ass than if I have combat boots on, you know? And I personally wanna go about life like I can kick ass.
You have to be uncomfortable in order to be successful, in some ways, because if you stay in your comfort zone, you would never do the things that you need to do.

Be what you love. Do what you love. Just feel comfortable in your own skin.

“It’s important for young people currently being bullied to know that, and that people they look up to now may have also been bullied back then. That being bullied is a temporary state and that, to paraphrase the anti-homophobia campaign, it does get better.”
There has to be an understanding of ‘I’m going to make the music I love,’ and if it happens to be something that does well, that’s awesome, but I’m not going to make something targeted a certain way to make that happen, that’s the difference. I’m not going to sit here and say ‘I want this song to be on the radio, so I’m going to make it sound like everything on the radio.’ That’s a different direction, and one I’m avoiding.

With something like art, where you draw so much from your personal life, you don’t want to separate the two… and names hold a lot of power. So if I felt like I was Lights onstage, but something else offstage, it would be very stressful, and borderline fake!

It’s funny how life can change so much but still nothing changes at all. Or maybe it’s that life changes, but you as a person don’t or maybe we adjust, but don’t actually change.
