"My Obsession: LIGHTS" by Rock Sound magazine
Rock Sound: Let's start from the beginning - for the uninitiated, what is World of Warcraft:
Lights: It's what's called a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game. You create a character, you can customise it, not only in the way that it looks but in the way that you level it up. You can be different things - in a fight you can be a healer, or a melee fighter. I'm always the melee fighter, I always like being in the action! It's just like throwing yourself into another world. You can team up with people in other guilds, take down bosses, complete quests, it's totally for everybody!
RS: How did you first get into it?
Lights: I have great memories of how it started, actually! None of my friends were into Warcraft and I didn't know anyone that played. It was before I moved out so I was probably 17. I remember really wanting to start playing, then finally seeing the South Park episode where they're dealing with Warcraft; that was the straw that broke the camel's back! For about a year or two following, I mostly just explored. There's so much to see in Azeroth. I'd be horseback riding on the beaches in the game, listening to the new songs, it was like an other-worldly experience!
RS: So what does your character look like?
Lights: The character you spend all your time on is called your Main. Mine is named Lightsalot and she's a Draenei Death Knight. She specialises in spreading diseases. It's kind of a filthy concept but it's totally cool. Draenei are kind of an alien race and she has hooves. They are very shapely and have nice bodies. They're the sexiest ones!
RS: How much does Warcraft allow you to interact with your fans in the game?
Lights: A while back, I started posting online about my character. People that were familiar with my music would then come meet me in Warcraft. That's when I realised I'd only been scratching the surface. There's so much more about the game that I hadn't been experiencing. Eventually a fan started a fan guild called Lightsguild and I joined that. It's like a virtual platform to meet and hang out with fans. It's on a whole other level, and you're on this equal plain. And it's totally safe, right?! You're not running the risk of meeting a fan somewhere and getting kidnapped or anything!
RS: So you have quite a dedicated following within the game, then?
Lights: Yeah! A lot of the Lightsguildies come out to shows in Texas or New York. It's a really cool relationship, because it's not based on how people look or how people think you should feel around them. It's people being good to each other and supportive. To every other unsuspecting player, I'm just another average player. I'm not even one of the good ones in the game!
RS: How much of your life does Warcraft consume, then?
Lights: Oh man, it's certainly somehting I have to control, especially when I'm trying to have a career! In total I've spent about 40 straight days on my character. That's pretty intense.
RS: Warcraft has become much more of a mainstream thing over the last few years. Have you noticed that affecting the game or the people who play it?
Lights: Oh, I know - have you seen the adverts? There's a Mr T one, a Chuck Norris one... it certainly is more "acceptable", not that that's ever been deterring for me. It doesn't feel any different to me, I play it because I love it. People should do things like that. It doesn't matter if someone thinks it's uncool!
RS: You've also got quite a collection of Warcraft and other fantasy paraphernalia, haven't you?
Lights: One of the assets of being a fan of Warcraft is understanding the lore and story behind it. It makes the gameplay that much more exciting. I have a lot of the novels, the graphic novels, deluxe editions of each expansion that come with art books and things. I have a whole bunch of action figures, too. I've got a sword called Frostmourne, it's a legendary weapon. It's said to be the most powerful in the game. It was a gift from a fan - an actual replica. It's huge, it's the first thing you see when you come to my house. I've also got a replica of the Twinblade of the Phoenix, which is another really special weapon in Warcraft. I've got a tattoo of that as well. A fan that lives in Japan had a Twinblade constructed out of wood and sent it over to me. I have that facing off with the Frostmourne on my wall!
RS: You clearly have an active imagination. As a kid, were you the sort of person who was dreaming up characters and fantasy worlds to explore?
Lights: Oh yeah, definitely. I was always developing my own characters. One of them was a frog called Monty. As a kid, I was pretty innocent, but every time I made a comic or a character or something, it was very morbid. I would draw these huge comics of this frog who was essentially a stick character, but he would fall down the drain and lose an eyeball and get his limbs cut off. Eventually he got chewed up by a cat. It was this completely terrible, sadistic story. I'm not sure if my parents were concerned...
RS: Finally, if you grew up in the analogue age before World of Warcraft ever existed, where would you get your kicks?
Lights: I'd probably be a gladiator. I'm super-empowered by female warriors and women that fight and put on armor and take weapons. I'd probably just be a free spirit and go make my own adventures!

Guys, I'm sorry...
The video is now fully uploaded but it’s stretched weirdly. I’m going to have to upload it again.
